3 Reasons You Need To Take A Break

"I'm too busy." "I have too much to do." "I can sleep when I'm dead."

How many times have you - or someone you know - used that excuse?

It is easy to get caught up in our work lives that we forget to carve out our "me" time. Yes, you might have a lot to do and sometimes powering through it can be beneficial; however, taking a small break from everything can make you more productive and leave you feeling good.

Relaxing is Healthy

Having a lot to do weighs heavy on our minds. Restless nights and disrupted sleeps are often a symptom of high stress levels. This leads to less focus, impaired memory, an increased likeliness of accidents and an overall decreased quality of life. Taking "you" time can help reset your sleep patterns to improve on these areas.

Stress can increase your risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks and other cardiac problems.

There is plenty of research on the affects of chronic stress; if it lasts more than a month but less than 6 months, it doubles a person's risk of catching a cold. Although there is no definitive answer as Sheldon Cohen - a Ph.D Psychology professor at Carnegie Mellon University - administers further testing, it is apparent that stress weakens the body's ability to fight inflammation. Boost Your Memory

Take a break to refresh your mental capacity and simultaneously lower stress levels.

A well-needed (and deserved!) break can boost your memory, especially when you find yourself relaxing. A recent study demonstrates how chronic stress impairs the prefrontal cortex: part of the brain centering on abstract thought, cognitive analysis and identifying appropriate behaviour.

Similarly, shorter bursts of stress levels impact the brain's memory and learning. Multiple studies conclude that stress increases proteins in the brain linked to Alzheimer's, which can potentially increase the risk of developing the disease sooner.

Increase Productivity

In a rush to be productive and accomplish everything, we undermine our ability to perform at our best. Consistent focus is required to be productive. As an example, Ernst & Young conducted an internal survey that came to an interesting conclusion. For every additional "10 hours of vacation time employees took, their year-end performance ratings improved 8 percent." (Inc.)

Taking a break can increase productivity. Sometimes taking a break helps us better understand and improve on a current method or issue.

More productivity = more happiness
More happiness leads you to excel at what you are doing.

Often people who take time off are more productive so they can afford the vacation time.

So take a vacation! Take time off! Do something for yourself - whether that means relaxing at home or going on a small adventure, find your zen. Productivity will follow.
