Get Out There And Get Creative

Do you have writer's block? Are you staring at a blank canvas? Watching too much TV?

Get off your butt and do something about it. An idea is not going to whack you in the face while you sit there mindlessly thinking or watching something that isn't useful. Go outside. Play in the snow. Build a snowman. Build a fort. Walk around the mall. LISTEN to what the world has to offer.

Focus on conversations you overhear, the birds chirping, and wind rustling leaves on a tree. What does the world smell like after a recent rainfall or a BBQ? Is it freezing cold or is it a bit warmer than you expected? Let your mind wander and you will be surprised by what you will find.

Inspiration does not come from nowhere. Every idea, every thought, every creative experience stems from something. If you have nothing to drive that inspiration, then go out into the world and find it. If you're reading a book that consumes you and leaves you on your toes, ask yourself: why is it making me feel this way? How can I make someone feel this way with my art?

You don't have to read a book to find that passion, but you will not find something motivating by staring at moving pictures or a blank screen. Those will lead you to bad distractions. They are rabbit holes. A blank screen can lead to frustration or boredom that is easily replaced with social media. Social media will drag you in so many directions you won't realize how you got there and how much time you have wasted. TV can lead to binge-watching merely because it is available to you. Those distractions squash imagination. They leave our minds numb because there is no thought as we consume them.

The real world may be cold, and it may ask you to move or play, or speak and listen. The real world will ask more of you and give you more in return. That is how you find something that resonates with you, but our generation... we feel entitled. We want to work for things and leave our mark, but then we get down when it doesn't come to us. It's contradictory. I have been guilty of committing these silly crimes. I'm sure many of us have. The key to re-discovering that creative path is to overcome those distractions and redirect our sad feelings. We need to participate in the real world.

To find something that is a positive distraction - that will lead to something bigger. Be brave enough to get out there and discover something that will bring your imagination to its highest potential.
You will be much happier with the end result.
